Making banking worth coming back to
Banking apps have an engagement problem. People open them to check a balance or make a transfer, then leave. The experience is functional but rarely motivating. For a generation of users who grew up with apps that reward progress, celebrate milestones, and make even mundane tasks feel meaningful, purely transactional banking feels flat.
CIBC wanted to explore how gamification could change that. The brief was to design features that would make the CIBC mobile banking app more engaging, encouraging users to build better financial habits, stay active within the app, and feel a sense of progress toward their goals.
The challenge was doing this in a way that felt appropriate for a major financial institution. Gamification in fintech walks a fine line. Too playful and it undermines trust, too subtle and it has no effect.
"This was not a classroom exercise. It was a deliberate simulation of how a real client sprint actually runs, full days of work, a hard deadline, and a client who expected something worth commending at the end of it."
