A seven month capstone project with a real external client. Working with the Integrative Conservation Clinic at William and Mary University in Virginia, our team of seven redesigned their ecological conservation database from the ground up, placing 3rd in the final competition

01 — The Problem

A database that worked, but not well enough

The Integrative Conservation Clinic at William and Mary University in Virginia runs a digital database used by practitioners and researchers across North America to manage and access ecological conservation data. Like many specialized research tools, it had grown organically over time into something that worked, but not particularly well. The interface was difficult to navigate, the information architecture did not reflect how researchers actually thought about and searched for data, and the overall experience created friction in work that was already complex and demanding.

The clinic partnered with the UX Design program at Wilfrid Laurier University to find a better solution, framing it as a capstone competition for final year students. Our team of seven was tasked with redesigning the database interface from the ground up, with the actual users of the system at the center of every decision we made.

What made this project meaningful was the nature of the work the database supports. Conservation researchers rely on this tool to do work that matters in the real world. Getting the design wrong does not just create frustration. It slows down work that has genuine environmental significance.
